Focus and Scope
Comunicação, Mídia e Consumo (CMC), a Qualis Capes A3 journal (2017–2020), aims to promote academic debate in the field of Social Communication, articulating communication and media studies—media outlets, their production logics and reception processes—with consumption studies, understood as a sociocultural practice that defines the contemporary scene. Its editorial line focuses on addressing relevant themes in the field of Communication, considered a complex sociocultural process and practice.
CMC receives academic articles written by PhD holders, PhD candidates, Master’s holders and Master’s students, the latter in co-authorship with PhD holders. These articles should problematize broader communicational and media processes, highlighting their interrelations with sociocultural logics and practices of consumption. Specifically, the journal welcomes articles that discuss results of theoretical-empirical research on communication, media, and consumption from diverse critical perspectives.
Articles must be theoretically grounded, drawing on different authors to develop a consistent reflection on the topic addressed. Empirical analyses should prioritize an interpretative discussion of the results achieved, based on the theoretical framework guiding the research.
Edited since 2004 by the Graduate Program in Communication and Consumer Practices of ESPM (Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing), São Paulo, the journal publishes high-quality national and international academic production. Published in digital format, the journal accepts articles in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, and charges no fees for submission, evaluation, or publication. It follows the principle of democratizing scientific knowledge by encouraging immediate, free, and public access to all its content.
CMC provides immediate open access to its content, following the principle that making scientific knowledge freely available promotes greater global democratization of knowledge. Articles submitted to CMC are published in open access under the Creative Commons Attribution license, which allows use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, without restrictions, provided that the original work is properly cited.
To ensure agility in scientific dissemination, the journal aligns with Open Science practices and accepts articles deposited in preprint repositories such as SciELO Preprints, MediArXiv, SociArXiv, and OSF Preprints.
Peer Review Process
Evaluation Procedures and Ethics and Misconduct Committee
All manuscripts submitted to the journal undergo a desk review process that includes two basic procedures: first, compliance with the formal requirements established in the submission guidelines is verified; second, plagiarism is checked using specific software (SafeAssign). In cases of plagiarism or other non-compliance, the manuscript is rejected and the author(s) are duly informed.
Once accepted at the first stage and anonymized, the manuscript is evaluated by two reviewers from the Scientific and Technical Board and/or external ad hoc reviewers. In case of divergent reviews, a third reviewer is consulted. The evaluation outcome is communicated to the author(s), along with a synthesis of the reviews. Articles may be rejected, accepted with revisions, or accepted. In cases of acceptance with revisions, authors must make the required changes and resubmit the manuscript for a new evaluation. The final decision regarding publication rests with the Editorial Coordination.
In cases of suspected plagiarism or misconduct in a published article, the ESPM Research Ethics Committee will be consulted to endorse the editors’ decision—previously submitted to the PPGCOM coordination and reviewed by the Program’s board—or to suggest appropriate procedures.

Journal History
The journal Comunicação, Mídia e Consumo has been published since 2004 by the Graduate Program in Communication and Consumer Practices of the Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing of São Paulo (PPGCOM-ESPM).
The journal is indexed in eight databases on scientific journal portals: SCOPUS, Diadorim, DOAJ, EBSCO, Latindex, Livre, the CAPES Journal Portal, and Sumários.org. In recent years, the journal has published issues organized around open themes in trilingual editions (Portuguese, Spanish, and English). Recognition of the journal’s value to the Brazilian communication field indicates the consolidation of ESPM’s program proposal within communication and consumption studies. The journal’s inclusion in the Scopus database in 2018 reaffirmed the efforts undertaken by the editors, as well as the institutional investment that has materialized in the allocation of annual resources for visual design, editorial services, and translations. It is also worth noting that, according to data available on Google Scholar, CMC had received 4,107 citations by 2021, a significant number among Brazilian academic journals in the field of communication.
