Abstract

This article examines representations of motherhood and grandmotherhood in the Australian films The Babadook (2014) and Relic (2020) through the lenses of the care economy and social horror. The central hypothesis is that monstrosity in these works emerges from labor exhaustion and the privatization of social reproduction. Through a comparative analysis, the article discusses how domestic isolation, bodily abjection, and affective ambivalence are represented as material expressions of the crisis of invisible care work in neoliberal society. It concludes that these contemporary horror films expose the unsustainability of a system that demands unlimited commitment from women without collective support, transforming the home into a space of confinement and trauma.
